Supreme Court Permits Use of Green Crackers in NCR Under Strict Rules

The Supreme Court of India has allowed the use of green crackers in the National Capital Region (NCR) during the upcoming festive season, ending weeks of uncertainty for manufacturers and sellers. The apex court clarified that only environmentally safe, NEERI-certified crackers will be permitted, subject to strict sale and usage restrictions.

The ruling comes amid growing concerns over Delhi’s alarming air quality levels during Diwali. The Court emphasized that while cultural traditions must be respected, environmental protection remains paramount. The permissible window for bursting crackers will be restricted to a few hours on Diwali night, and unauthorized sale or transport of banned firecrackers will invite penalties.

Environmentalists welcomed the decision as a “balanced approach” that allows celebration while curbing pollution. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure compliance and monitor air quality levels during and after the festival.
