Telangana Government Approves ₹1,200 Crore for Hyderabad Flood Mitigation Project

The Telangana government has approved an allocation of ₹1,200 crore for an extensive flood mitigation project in Hyderabad aimed at strengthening stormwater drainage systems and curbing recurrent urban flooding. The decision was taken following successive monsoon seasons that caused widespread waterlogging and property damage across several city zones.

The project, to be executed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), will include desilting of nalas, widening of drainage channels, and construction of new underground stormwater lines in vulnerable localities. Priority zones include Kukatpally, LB Nagar, and parts of Secunderabad. Officials stated that the project would be implemented in phases over an 18month timeline with realtime monitoring through geotagging and digital inspection systems. Special engineering teams will assess floodprone microzones for targeted interventions.

Urban planning experts welcomed the move but emphasised the need for strict enforcement against illegal constructions encroaching on natural water bodies. Environmental groups have also urged integration of sustainable urban design methods

The initiative marks one of the state’s largest investments in climate resilient infrastructure and reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding urban populations against extreme weather impacts.
